How To Play Golf In Windy Conditions

As you may have seen the opening PGA tournament is trying to get underway on the beautiful island of Hawaii, but the opening round has been postponed for the first 3 days due to the Incredibly high wings causing the balls to be blown off the tee peg plus blown off the greens too…

So how should you adapt to playing in windy conditions…

The most important thing to say is don’t try to force the shots, play with the wind and try to make it your friend and not your enemy..

Some points below to remember when playing in the wind..

TEE SHOTS- When playing into the wind tee your ball up a little lower to help create a lower ball flight, but when playing with the wind behind you the tee the ball a little higher and let the wind carry the ball for you…

FAIRWAY SHOTS- Firstly calculate how far you have to go to the pin, then if playing into the wind try to calculate due to the strength of the wind how many yards you feel it adds to the length of your shot, I.e if you have say 150 yards to go but the wind is very strong this may make your shot play 170 yards, so instead of trying to hit your 150 yard club to hard causing the wind to stall the shot making it come up short, have the confidence to hit your 170/180 yard club to be swung most importantly into the wind smooth not hard and you will find yourself on the green more often.. obviously the opposite when playing down wind, if 150 yards to go then maybe hit a club yardage of 130 yards to allow the wind to carry the ball the extra 20 yards…

CHIPPING- Maybe when playing into the wind play more of a chip and run type of shot rather than a lob shot where the wind may affect the yardage your trying to gain.

PUTTING- The only thing I would recommend is when playing in extremely windy conditions like they were trying to do in Hawaii yesterday, then is to create a wider stance to create your putting stroke with more stability..

So therefore play with the wind, swing smoothly, never try to it the ball harder just use extra clubs where necessary…
